December 2011

Topping off this year I spent 4 days in Cannes, France, attending the International Luxury Travel Mart. I added several boutique properties to my list of unique places to send my clients.

November 2011

If it’s November, I must be in Marrakesh, site of the best experiential travel market, PURE Life Experiences. In addition to connecting with companies that deliver authentic experiences, I managed to do several hotel inspections and found that my favorite “in-town” places to stay were a small in close to the Medina and a plush riyad inside the Medina. Outside of Marrakesh is the not-to-be-missed Kasbah Tomadot, Sir Richard Branson’s oasis in the Atlas Mountains.

September 2011

Two weeks off the beaten path in China! Beginning in Shanghai we experienced Yellow Mountain and its famous mist in Huangshan; a tea ceremony and West Lake in Hangzhou; the pandas, a Daoist temple tour led by a Daoist monk, and an archeological dig in Chengdu; and the spiritual realm of Lhasa highlighted by a luncheon with a Tibetan Buddhist monk.

From there I flew to Nepal to fulfill one item on my bucket list, a trek to Base Camp Everest! For 16 days I trekked over 100 miles and an elevation of over 18,000 feet. I really can’t describe the thrill of viewing Everest, meeting the sherpas, soaking up the local culture, and seeing the smiles of the villagers. Something inside me experienced a profound spiritual and emotional shift. I am forever changed and enhanced by this experience.

August 2011

Another August and another Travel Mart at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. It is the most significant and valuable meeting of the year! Consider it my “buying trip” for my clients. This is my opportunity to find the newest and best new destinations, hotels, experiences and to network with the top minds in the travel industry.

June 2011

Barbara and I escorted some clients on a delightful Seabourn Cruise from Istanbul to Venice. Some of our port visits included Kusadasi (Ephesus), Corfu, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Lesbos, Piraeus (Athens), Kotor, and Dubrovnik. We sailed aboard the Seabourn Odyssey, one of the finest cruise experiences available. Before we began the cruise we spent 3 glorious days in Istanbul and when we finished our voyage we lingered a few days inVenice. Traveler’s tip: do NOT buy a coffee or soda in St. Mark’s Square, a true “gouge the tourist venue. Just stop somewhere off the square and save your Euros for something else.

May 2011

Back I went to South Africa to attend Indaba, the premier African travel market. It was an opportunity for me to cement relationships and make some new connections. Prior to the meeting I spent time in Johannesburg at the always wonderful Saxon Hotel and then a couple of nights at Shambala Private Reserve. After the meeting I enjoyed a few nights at Sir Richard Branson’s Ulusaba Private Reserve, wonderful game viewing, food, and star gazing!

April 2011

We spent a couple of weeks sharing our love of Africa with some of our clients. We introduced them to Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa. Highlights included watching lions swim across parts of the Okavanga Delta, staying at the same resort in Livingstone, Zambia that hosted 5 presidents of Southern African countries who were having a summit meeting, watching a 15 minute old baby rhino take its first steps, and having a Malay cooking class in Cape Town.

November 2010

We spent a week in Kauai, a journey with 2 goals: participating in Classic Vacations Marketing Partners meeting and spending time with our daughter, son-in-law, and adorable grandson! The first few days our home away from home was the uber luxurious St. Regis Princeville and the rest of the time we stayed on the South side in Poipu Beach. Aside from the obvious draw of our daughter and her family, I am always awed by the variety of the geography and the many rainbows!

November 2010

We trekked in Volcano National Park, Rwanda, to see the famous mountain gorillas. What a thrilling experience to be face to face with these gentle creatures! How do you top that? We went to Kenya, almost our home away from home, and safaried with Micato to the Masai Mara, enjoyed the beautifully refurbished Mount Kenya Safari Club, and dined at  the home of the American Ambassador in Nairobi.

October 2010

Twist my arm…I “had to” attend a meeting at Gleneagles, Scotland! You know what that means, righT? Golf, golf , and more golf! Gleneagles spiffed up since my last visit to Scotland. Everything was a 10+! Beautiful accommodations, gourmet meals, a dinner in a castle, and did I mention GOLF???

July 2010

Throw a shrimp on the barbie, mate, and say hello to Western Australia. Beginning in Perth, we also visited Broome, Sal Salis, and Margaret River. Margaret River boasts some of the best of Australia’s vineyards and some great local restaurants. On the way back home we stopped off in New Zealand for a few days of R&R at Treetops. Think of this fine property as Ralph Lauren meets supreme nature-walking paths, waterfalls, and serenity.

May 2010

Aloha! Our daughter,Lauren lives in Kauai and gave birth to our grandson, Jacob on May 1, 2010, so Barbara and I went to visit them. Jacob is adorable (we even have photos of him on our company photo-website, picasaweb.com/travelingking1!) We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai and enjoyed an oceanview room and impeccable service. Lauren and I surprised my wife Barbara with a vow renewal ceremony in honor of our anniversary. It was one of the few times Barbara was at a loss for words! Thinking of a weddding or vow renewal in Kauai? We recommend our daughter Lauren, www.loveandlightceremonies.com, a licensed officiant!

The next part of this odyssey was spent at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua, always on our “FAVE” list! The new suites are terrific, golf always wonderful, and food guaranteed to add lbs! We ventured to the Wailea side, too, for a couple of nights stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani, a laid back choice for families.

February 2010

I spent an intense couple of days in Scottsdale for our quarterly Virtuoso AALG meeting (Agent to Advisor Leadership Group). What amazing synergy when we get together. While it’s said that great minds think alike, it’s actually our diversity that helps each of us capture the best practices of the others to grow our ability and talent in order and be even more effective in assisting you. Our host was the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North. Ask me about the delicious Chocolate Menu  we enjoyed-from amuse bouche to sweets after dessert-all seasoned with chocolate!

December, 2009

“I spent 12 days in New Zealand visiting some familiar places and adding a host of new ones to my portfolio. From Bay of Islands to Queenstown, I did site inspections and even sampled several one-day experiences that I know my clients will love.”

September, 2009

“Barbara and I had the good fortune to return to Africa (our 7th trip in 10 years!). This time we focused exclusively on South Africa and managed to enjoy several safari camps and some of the best properties in Johannesburg and Cape Town.”

April, 2009

“Thanks to Ian Swain, founder of Swain Tours, I enjoyed a wonderful week of sightseeing and site inspections prior to attending the Virtuoso International Symposium in Sydney. Barbara has made me promise to take her back to two of my favorite properties, Southern Ocean Lodge and Qualia!”
